Tuna & Catnip Delights
Irresistible treats that combine the protein-rich goodness of tuna with the aromatic appeal of catnip. Your feline friend will be purring with delight.
Ingredients
- 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water, drained
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon dried catnip
- 1 egg
- 2-3 tablespoons water
Tip: Always use tuna packed in water, not oil. Avoid tuna with added salt or seasonings. For more information on selecting safe ingredients, see our Getting Started guide.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Preheat and Prepare
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Drain the tuna thoroughly, pressing out excess water with a paper towel to ensure the treats have the right texture.
Process the Tuna
In a food processor, blend the drained tuna until it forms a smooth paste. If you don't have a food processor, you can mash it very thoroughly with a fork. The smoother the paste, the better the texture of your final treats.
Add the Egg
Add the egg to the tuna paste and blend or mix until well combined. The egg acts as a binder and adds protein to the treats.
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, cornmeal, and dried catnip. The catnip should be evenly distributed throughout the dry mixture. Fresh catnip can also be used, but dried works better for baking.
Mix Everything Together
Add the tuna and egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well. The dough should be slightly sticky. Gradually add water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together and is workable but not too wet.
Shape the Treats
Roll the dough into small balls about 1/2 inch in diameter. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a small space between each. Gently flatten each ball with your finger or the tines of a fork to create small discs.
Bake to Perfection
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the treats are firm and slightly golden around the edges. They should be cooked through but not overly crispy, as cats generally prefer softer textures.
Cool and Store
Allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. These treats contain fresh fish, so refrigeration is essential for food safety.

Tips & Variations
Catnip Considerations
Not all cats respond to catnip, and kittens under 6 months typically don't react to it. If your cat doesn't seem interested, you can omit the catnip or try silver vine as an alternative. The treats will still be nutritious and appealing without it.
Texture Adjustments
For softer treats, reduce baking time by 3-5 minutes. For slightly crunchier treats, bake for the full 20 minutes. Most cats prefer softer textures, so err on the side of less baking time.
Size Variations
Make smaller pieces for training or frequent rewards, and slightly larger pieces for occasional treats. Remember that treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat's daily caloric intake. Learn more about portion control in our nutrition guide.
